The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was launched on 12th April 2005, to provide accessible, affordable and quality health care to the rural population, especially the vulnerable groups.
It was launched by the Government of India to provide food supplements at Balwadis to children of the age group 3–6 years in rural areas.
It is a centrally sponsored programme introduced in 1986 but now transferred to the State Sector. This programme follow the norms of SNP or of the nutrition component of the ICDS. Central Assistance for the programme consist of supply of free wheat and supportive costs for other ingredients, cooking, transport etc.
The Applied Nutrition Programme (ANP) was introduced as a pilot scheme in Orissa in 1963 which later on extended to Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. During 1973, it was extended to all the state of the country.
The Special Nutrition Programme (SNP) was launched in 1970-71 by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of India. It was initially launched as a Central Programme but was transferred to the state sector.
The Nutrition Society of India (NSI) is an association of nutrition professionals, programmers and policy makers from India and abroad. The society is dedicated to disseminate the results of the latest research in nutrition – basic and applied aspects; analyse the current status of nutrition programmes in the country and recommend appropriate strategies to promote nutrition of the community at large.
Association is especially concerned with Nutrition, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Herbs, Botanicals, Yoga, Healing Therapies, and Natural Medicines. The Association’s mission is to bring about a paradigm change in the lives of those who are underprivileged.

In addition, several reputed universities have recognized NIN as a Centre for Ph.D programmes in different disciplines.
